FAQs
What is STFC Technology?
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is a part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), a non-departmental public body that comprises seven research councils and two additional bodies: Innovate UK and Research England.
Sponsored by the Government’s Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology, STFC’s mission is to deliver world-leading national and international research and innovation capabilities and, through those, discover the secrets of the universe. The organisation primarily focuses on particle physics, nuclear physics, space science, and astronomy.
Its activities include supporting university-based research, innovation and skills development, providing access to world-leading large-scale facilities, working with partners to build National Science and Innovation Campuses, and ensuring the future pipeline of skilled young people by encouraging wider engagement with STEM subjects.
The Technology Department sits within STFC, as a centre of excellence for scientific engineering which empowers researchers through the invention, development and application of cutting-edge technologies. This could be delivering the insertion mechanism for installing sensors into a new detector for the ATLAS experiment’s latest upgrade at CERN or developing technology to facilitate nuclear physics breakthroughs for the future Electron-Ion Collider in the US.
Who do you work with (academia, industry, government)?
We work with academia, supporting university-based research; international science facilities, enabling innovation and scientific breakthroughs; industry, applying our expertise to commercial collaborations; and the UK public, demonstrating our impact and inspiring new STEM talent. As a part of UKRI, sponsored by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, we also work closely with the UK Government to support their mission to advance knowledge, improve lives, and drive growth.
How can organisations access your expertise or facilities?
