Nuclear Physics

We have many years of experience in the design of experimental nuclear physics systems for a wide range of detector types and sizes.

We produce flexible, powerful and easy-to-use software solutions for data acquisition and control, for custom-built electronics developed in-house and commercial off-the-shelf devices.

We collaborate with teams across Technology to provide the nuclear physics community with engineering design and manufacturing support.

We maintain a target preparation laboratory to produce thin film targets and foils. Targets can be requested using our online form or via email.

We have been involved in many nuclear physics collaborations in both the UK and abroad. Our partners include universities, research institutes, and industrial organisations. Our current projects include:

Our Nuclear Physics team stands outdoors beside a a sign for Daresbury Laboratory's Tower Building. The sign lists several groups, including Technology, Control Systems & Safety Interlocks, Detector Systems, Projects & Mechanical Engineering, and Nuclear Physics. The team stands on a grassy area next to a textured building wall, with trees and campus buildings visible in the background.

Our nuclear physicists also have their own research programme, which currently focuses on the spectroscopy of nuclei at the limits of stability and angular momentum, including:

  • Shell structure and deformation at ultra-high spins in nuclei.
  • Spectroscopy at the limits of nuclear existence.
  • Single particle structure and correlations in isospin asymmetric nuclei.
