The UK teamIn January, Kavi and Howard, graduates in our Projects and Mechanical Engineering team, showcased their contributions to the Hi-Lumi Large Hadron Collider Project at CERN's PhD and Graduate Showcase.
The pair were among just seven early careers staff from the UK invited to present.
Both Kavi and Howard used the opportunity to highlight their work delivering crab cavity cryomodules, special accelerating cavities that 'crab' (tilt) the LHC's beams to increase overlap and maximise collisions.
Their presentations detailed:
When asked about their experience, Kavi said:
“It was exciting to give a talk to the senior staff about the constant advancements in assembly tooling and quality documentation involved in progressing the mechanical assembly of the crab cavity cryomodules at Daresbury.
"I was also excited to see CERN and how the operation of our cryomodules would be conducted. It was my first time giving a conference-scale talk and it was a great learning experience for me.”
Howard also shared his thoughts:
"I was extremely grateful to have been invited to the showcase and present some of the work I’ve completed for the HiLumi project.
"The work I’ve done (CAD support and building an online inventory management system) is fairly behind-the-scenes and isn’t as technical as the work the mechanical engineers and physicists have been involved in, so I was surprised to have been invited.
"In the end, though, I think it turned out well and it was nice to highlight the continuous improvement work myself and the HiLumi team at DL have been doing to reduce wastage and streamline workflows, especially after lessons learnt from the RFD cryomodule build."
