The Optics Lab, located in building R34 at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, is designed around the testing and assembly of CMOS image sensors. To fully characterise image sensors, the environment has to be carefully controlled as any stray light can impact the results. To support this, the lab features several dark boxes capable of fully blocking all light, as well as fully calibrated light sources with wavelength capabilities from blue to near-infrared. The lab also houses an environmental chamber capable of operating at -70°C to +180°C for space qualification and the nitrogen storage needed to keep silicon wafers in perfect shape.
