Video: How our cryo-EM technology supports groundbreaking biological research

05 Oct 2026

How does our technology improve access to cryogenic electron microscopy techniques and support potentially groundbreaking biological research?

A thumbnail from the featured video with a young man facing the camera, with an electron microscope featured in the background and captions reading:

Our specialised CMOS sensors sit at the bottom of electron microscopes, detecting the electrons passing through a sample and enabling the reconstruction of a detailed image.

Our expertise in the design and development of these sensors for cryo-EM dates back to 2003, with the development of the first RAL StarTracker sensor.

Over the last 23 years, our skilled microelectronics engineers have delivered sensors for both direct and indirect detection methods in collaboration with scientific and industry partners, like ThermoFisher Scientific.

These technologies have played a pivotal role in the development of cryo-EM, supporting higher-resolution imaging for applications ranging from virology to drug discovery.
