A VIP visit to our high-power target facility and DUNE APA factory

08 May 2026

Between April and May, we were delighted to receive a visit from DUNE-UK, including co-spokespeople Sowjanya Gollapinni from Los Alamos National Laboratory and UKRI's David Newbold.

Two people hold and examine a small metal accelerator component together while talking. They are framed by the edges of a larger piece of technology, which the photographer is shooting through. Its shape is hard to discern, with only a hint of metal and a green colour. A pipe is visible behind the two people and a person's arm is to their left.
Sowjanya and Mike inspect target technology in our facility at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

The group visited our high-power target facility at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the APA factory at Daresbury Laboratory.

Our team at RAL prides itself on solving problems before they materialise and giving highly skilled, imaginative engineers the chance to push the boundaries of their field. We are a one-stop shop for accelerator-target technology with a proven track record of enabling major international experiments like DUNE.

At the DUNE APA factory at DL, our team plays a critical role, producing the large wire-based readout planes fundamental for recording neutrino interactions in DUNE’s far detector horizontal drift module. At the time of this visit, over 50 of the APAs have been built and we are rapidly approaching the half-way point.

Thank you to Sowjanya and the wider DUNE-UK delegation for their visit and the opportunity to showcase our capabilities.

These visits were originally shared on LinkedIn by the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment.
