Electrical Engineering and Power Supplies

Crowbar SwitchOur group of electrical engineers has a wealth of experience across all areas of electrical work and we have dedicated electrical support centres with bespoke facilities. We have particular experience in the following areas:

  • Large Facility Electrical Project Management
  • AC Distribution and Cable management
  • Electrical Safety
  • Vacuum system integration
  • Personnel Safety system integration
  • Process control - electrical interface

We can design, test, procure and commission any converter even with high currents (8KA) or ultrafast di/dt >50 KA/Microsecond. This has applications for septum and kicker magnets etc. We also produce and install converters with 5ppm resolution and 10ppm stability from 10W up to 1MW. Applications range from accelerator DC Dipoles and Quads through to RF systems and industrial processes.

We are experienced in high precision motion control and positioning systems. Our projects include the DLS Multilayer Polarimeter, the ILC Target Wheel and EMMA Magnet Alignment. We also can produce RF Phase Shifters, Diffractometers and Monochromators and can achieve stepper motor resolution to 0.1 micron and linear AC servo resolution to 20 nanometre.

The picture shows the 'Crowbar Switch' procuredA for ALICE (Accelerators and Lasers In Combined Experiments). This must conduct currents of up to 5kA in less than 10us to protect the expensive RF amplifiers. Another example is the RF Power Supply system integration for MICE (Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment) to deliver a voltage pulse of 200 kW peak power.
