ERU Test Site Facility - Wind Concentrator

The WEB Wind Concentrator

The scale turbine/concentrator design prototype was constructed on the ERU Test Site as part of the EU-funded Wind Energy For the Built Environment (WEB) project. It was tested with both a Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) and a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) - measurements were taken of the prevailing wind conditions and the power output.

Both turbine types were tested in the open air and then within the basic two towered concentrator (top and middle photos on the right . The HAWT was tested further when infills were installed between the original towers (top photo on the right). The tests revealed the degree to which the wind speeds were enhanced by the Concentrator, and the consequent increase in power output.  Imperial College (assisted by RAL) also measured the noise and vibration associated with the different configurations.
